E/C House

A ruin served as the starting point for the design of this holiday home on Pico Island. The design was born out of the desire to retain the ruin and the idea of a house that enhanced it, could be moulded on it and at the same time take advantage of it, o ering more diverse and complex living experiences than the existing typology.
Given that the building is approached at the roof level, due to the steeply sloping land, we designed all roofs as if they were decks, allowing them to be used as spaces for relaxation and contemplation.
The house, moulded in the interior from the stone walls, was designed with generous window spans to guarantee both light and full enjoyment of the beautiful landscape. At times they align with, and at times differ from, the ruin’s pre-existing windows, recreating contextualisations and relationships with the original limits of the house.
The design is a movement between a boundary line, made of stone, and the new volumes that allow themselves to be guided by it, diverge from it or extend themselves, wherever the need for space or a view arises.
