Peepbox

THE PEEPBOX - an unfamiliar box added to one of the most common objects in a city - a public bench.
It adds an extra experience to a common gesture - seating in a public place.
One can see a video-art projection in a lunchtime break, or while waiting for the bus.
It begets a dialogue with the human body. It is a strange box with a friendly cut-out in the shape of a man's outline. Induces a public action that may become a private encounter between people and art.
The specific association between a form of art-display and an urban seating makes the PEEPBOX a generic object - it fits in any bench in Calgary as it fits in any bench in any city worldwide. And we can consider a large number of places to seat in a city - a small wall, a lake border, an esplanade chair.
It can be a closed box with a video-art projection in the interior. Or one can place inside a sculpture, or a picture illuminated by a spotlight. It can have an open window framing a performance on the outside, or projecting an image on a screen or on a building during the night.
The PEEPBOX degrees of interactivity with city and public just depend on artists' purposes and on citizens’ attitudes.
